If you've done any
shopping for dog supplies lately, you've probably seen or heard
about Greenies® - those green chew bones shaped like big toothbrushes.
Greenies® Treats, have rapidly become one of the most popular
dog chews. So what exactly are they? Are they good for your dog?
Greenies were developed as a pleasant way to promote dental
hygiene in dogs. They contain Chlorophyll, to help freshen breath,
and ingredients which have been shown to reduce tartar and help
prevent plaque.
Greenies® ingredients are: Processed
wheat gluten, glycerin, powdered cellulose fiber, monosodium phosphate,
monoglycerides of edible fatty acids, magnesium stearate and chlorophyll.
Unlike some other edible chew bones, they contain no artificial
coloring, preservatives, plastics or other inert ingredients.
Greenies are not high in fat (analysis shows min. 4% fat) but
they do have a high percentage (52%) of protein. If your dog has
kidney problems or is on a special diet due to other medical conditions, you should consult your vet.
Like most treats, they
are not a balanced food and should not comprise more than 25% of
your dog's diet. Also, Greenies are fairly soft so watch your dog
for any tendency to "gulp",
(i.e. bite off big chunks and swallow them whole) as this can be
dangerous.
Greenies® are highly digestible - they freshen breath, help
reduce tartar and prevent plaque and contain no preservatives or
plastics. Most dogs like the taste - according to the manufacturer,
ones study showed 1 in 3 dogs actually preferred them to pig ears.
The treats come in sizes for petite (for dogs 10-20 lbs), regular
(for dogs 20-50 lbs), large (for dogs 50-100 lbs) and jumbo (dogs
over 100 lbs) as well as Greenies® Lil Bits™ - tiny
pieces for pocket pets, dogs under 10 lbs, puppies or dogs who
have trouble chewing.
