Barkin' In The Rain ... Spring 2005

Some dogs are water lovin' fools... Labs, Goldens - those guys just LIVE for days when it's, so to speak, "raining cats and dogs".

Not mine. No, I have shelties, and like most shelties they view rain as the low-rent relative of the dreaded b*th. Since outdoors is the only acceptable place to "do one's business" they've developed a couple of "interesting" rainy day coping strategies:

  1. Stand on the porch for a long time weighing your options. Then run out, do what you have to do as close to the house as possible, run straight back in, shake water all over (bonus points for soaking the cruel human who sent you out in the first place). Use the sofa for a towel.
  2. Stand out in the downpour with a bewildered look on your face until you're totally drenched. THEN run in, shake water all over, use the sofa for a towel. Repeat an hour later (because you were too distracted to actually DO anything while you were outside).

Needless to say, neither of these are satisfactory from either a canine or a housekeeping standpoint. ( Can you say "wet dog smell"?)

For dogs who don't like to get wet and people who don't appreciate soggy furniture, here are some things to help keep your dog (and house) dry in wet weather:

The Dry Bones dog umbrella

iconicon This is such a clever "why didn't I think of that" idea - an umbrella turned upside down which attaches to your dogs collar or harness in place of a leash! Perfect for small to medium sized dogs, the umbrella is 29" in diameter and a great way to keep your dog dry on walks. Find the Dry Bones Pet Umbrella iconand other great pet products at Improvements Catalog.

That old standby - the raincoat.
